View from the Long Trail

Worth Mountain (3234 feet)

It was a perfect day for hiking. The weather was cool, but not cold. I wore a t-shirt and a fleece for warmth, although I was a bit chilly at the summit. I will have to upgrade my clothing soon as the season progresses. There was a bit of color in the trees today, but the main foliage season has yet to get started.

I took the Long Trail south from Middlebury Gap 2.7 miles to the summit of Worth Mountain (elevation change: 1090 feet, average grade: 404 ft/mi). The hike was straightforward. After a fairly steep climb out of the gap, the trail was an easy to moderate ridge walk. The summit of Worth Mountain is a relatively long, ridge-like summit, fully wooded. The southern end of the summit ridge felt like the height of land. That's where I ate my lunch.

There was no view from the summit itself, but there was a nice view from the top of one of the Middlebury College Snow Bowl ski trails (as shown above). It looked to the east toward the range of mountains behind Randolph and Roxbury where I used to live some years ago.

Return to the Vermont 100 highest list.
